Knowing this, it\u2019s easy to assume that you\u2019ll naturally get enough <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D in the summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zyn22.com\/why-you-need-vitamin-d-in-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutritionists warn that this may not be the case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however. Before you completely abandon your vitamin D supplements, consider this: research indicates that as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/new-study-found-80-percent-of-covid-19-patients-were-vitamin-d-deficient#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%20an,have%20low%20vitamin%20D%20levels.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41% of adult Americans are vitamin D deficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you tell if you need to keep supplementing, or if summer can take care of your vitamin D needs? There are a few things to consider when trying to decide if you should still take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D in the summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We outline them below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D Tests<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most definitive way to know if you need supplemental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D in the summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to get a blood test. It\u2019s the only way to know for certain if your vitamin D levels are normal or if you have a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.veganlifenutrition.com\/the-truth-about-vitamin-d-and-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D deficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can schedule a vitamin D test with your primary care physician, who will be able to read your labs and tell you exactly how much vitamin D you should be taking. If you go this route, be warned that understanding how to read and adjust your vitamin D levels can be complex. Most health care professionals recommend consulting a physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun\u2019s rays are strongest at the equator and weaker at points further from that midline. People who live in warmer climates closer to the equator are more likely to get enough sunlight to produce adequate levels of vitamin D. Meanwhile, those living further from the equator in cooler climates may find that they\u2019re more likely to experience a\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D deficiency.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to WebMD, in the U.S. only people who live south of a line drawn from Los Angeles to Columbia, S.C. get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/osteoporosis\/features\/the-truth-about-vitamin-d-why-you-need-vitamin-d#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enough sunlight for vitamin D production throughout the year.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin Tone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your location can affect the amount of sunlight you\u2019re exposed to, but your skin tone plays a role, too.\u00a0 Those with darker skin tones may need more sunlight exposure to produce optimal levels of vitamin D, whereas those with lighter skin tones more sensitive to the effects of the sun may produce vitamin D more quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune Function and Autoimmune Disease<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The link between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases is still being explored. However, research now indicates that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D deficiency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be a result of many autoimmune diseases, not a cause.
